The farmers’ grievances, now brought to the forefront within the parliamentary chambers, revolve around economic pressures stemming from Ukrainian grain imports and the environmental regulations outlined in the EU’s Green Deal. They argue that these factors pose significant threats to their livelihoods and demand immediate attention, state news agency PAP reported.
The union’s initiative underscores a mounting unease among Polish farmers, who perceive both the influx of agricultural goods from Ukraine and the stringent environmental policies of the EU as detrimental to their agricultural operations.
“We are here today to voice our opposition to the Green Deal and the unrestricted importation of goods from Ukraine,” stated a union spokesperson during a press briefing. “Our intention is not to cause disruption, but to peacefully draw attention to the challenges facing the agricultural sector”, he was quoted as saying by PAP.
The farmers have pledged to maintain their occupation of the Sejm until their request for a meeting with Prime Minister Tusk is granted.
